Sundell wins back-to-back saddle bronc titles at Mandan, ND
MANDAN, N.D. (July 4, 2018) –Winning the saddle bronc riding at Mandan Rodeo Days is becoming an Independence Day tradition for Wade Sundell of Boxholm, Iowa.
The seven-time National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier and two-time reserve world champion gave the July 4 crowd a reason to cheer when he rode Dakota Rodeo’s horse Little Sicillia for 87 points.
That was the highest score tallied on Little Sicillia in the horse’s two-year pro rodeo career and earned Sundell $5,273.
In 2017, Sundell competed the opening night of Mandan Rodeo Days and scored a rare 90 points on Dakota Rodeo’s Chirrikawa. No rider was able to score higher the next two nights and Sundell won $3,167.
Another annual tradition for Sundell is visiting the Eide Chrysler Winner’s Circle and pocketing a $100 bonus after tallying the highest score of the night.
In all, Sundell’s 16 seconds of bronc riding over the last two years in Mandan were worth $8,640 or $540 per second. This year’s paycheck was $2,000 more because the rodeo committee doubled the added prize money in saddle bronc and bareback riding to draw more of the top riders on the circuit.
Winners in the seven pro rodeo events competed for nearly $133,000 this year. The biggest single paycheck went to bull rider Koby Radley of Montpelier, La., who rodeo Dakota Rodeo’s Soup In A Group for 91.5 points and $6,295.
Other event winners were Kaycee Feild, Spanish Fork, Utah, in bareback riding; Cyler Dowling, Newell, S.D., in steer wrestling; Paul David Tierney, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Tanner Braden, Dewey, Okla., in team roping; Dane Kissack, Spearfish, S.D., in tie-down roping, and Sissy Winn, Chapman Ranch, Texas, in barrel racing.
Mandan Rodeo Days will celebrate its 140th anniversary on July 2-4, 2019.
